1. How did you get into the industry? When did you know?
I have always known that I wanted to be a hairstylist. My Grandma and mom were in the industry, so I grew up around it. Its always been my first love!
2. How long have you been in the industry?
10 years.
3. What do you like most about being a hair stylist?
EVERYTHING! I am a social person so being able to meet people and form relationships with them while doing what I love is the best!
4. Where do you look for inspiration?
I look for inspiraton everywhere. Attending continuing education and doing hair for fashion shows & photo shoots is key to my inspiration. I also find it in music, art fashion, people, and being around others in my industry.
5. How do you keep up with the latest trends?
Education, Education, Education! Not only does it keep me inspired and motivated, it also allows me to stay current on whats going on in the world of hair and fashion so I can keep my guests informed.
6. What are some of your goals?
My ultimate dream is to do editorial work. Have my work published in fashion magazines, work with famous photographers, do hair for fashion week and in tv & film.
7. What do you consider your specility?
I LOVE it all, but color is my favorite. I also specialize in design for both men & women, and special occasion styles.
8. What is your approach to working with hair?
It starts with the consultation. I talk to my guest, listen to their hair needs, and find out what look they're going for. I also consider their lifestyle, personality, and the amount of styling and upkeep they're willing to do. Its also important to analyze the texture, condition, and density of the hair to figure out what styles would work on a daily basis and would best meet my guests needs.
9. How do you customize looks for your clients?
I love that all of my guests are unique, as well as their hair, so its fun coming up with looks specific for them. I find alot of my answers in the consultation, but I also like updating looks or slightly changing color formulas for the different seasons and changing trends.
10. Describe your personal style.
Ecclectic. I like the classic looks of the 40s/50s, mod looks of the 60s, bohemian styles of the 70s, and punk from the 80s. I like mixing pieces of those eras with styles of today.
11. What celebrity always has good hair?
I always love Zooey Deschanel, Gwen Stefani, and Nicole Ritchie's hair. Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashlee Simpson have great color, I especially loved Ashlee's hair red. Right now im obsessed with the girls from the show Mad Men, its set in 1960's New York, so the styles are AMAZING!!
12. What advice would you give someone coloring their hair for the first time?
Try to have an idea of the directon you're wanting to go, you can look at magazines for ideas or bring in pictures so we can visualize an end result. Its also ok to start small and work towards a final look. Even subtle changes can make a big difference. Have fun with it! |
